27A- READING REFLECTION NO. 3

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

1) What I found the most surprising was the fact before Phil Knight founded Nike it was originally called Blue Ribbon. The thing that I admire the most about the entrepreneur is that he knew that being young meant that you make a lot of crazy decision so he encourages it. There was nothing that i didn't admire about the entrepreneur, he put in everything he had to succeed. He started from rock bottom so if he failed there was nothing he could lose.

2) He knew what worked and what didn't. He started at a young age and didn't expect much. He was able to get a partner who believed in him and helped him in area he couldn't do. And he also knew that he couldn't force people to do things the way he wanted it to be, so he let them do what they wanted. All of that lead to his success.

3) I wasn't confused at any part of the book.

4) What gave him the idea of selling shoes from Japan? And where would he be if his former running coach, Bill Bowerman, didn't help him?

5) Phil's version of hard work is seeing results. He doesn't need employees to do what he what them to do, he just want them to do their own thing. That's what makes Nike, pretty much Nike.

  1. Gerielle,

Great post! I have never read this book and I am glad that I got a glimpse from your post. I did not know that the founder of Nike started his brand at a young age. I admire that about him a lot because knowing he is bound to make mistakes due to inexperience, he took a risk and now his brand is successful and well-known worldwide.

  2. Gerielle, when I first read the title of the book I was a little confused what it might be about, and I have to admit that I was a little surprised it was about Nike because I know Nike as both a shoe AND clothes brand. I think that just speaks to his success and how his hard work really paid off. His brand succeeded and expanded in ways he probably never imagined.
